Millefleur features overlapping abstracted foliage, like peering into a dense forest. Literally translated as “thousand flowers,” the name refers to motifs that fill the background of a tapestry, & often extend to the top edge, in place of sky. The gridded style of this pattern was inspired by a 1800s jacquard schematic from France. The designs were painted on graph paper, so that each row could be interpreted into threads on a loom. Beautiful in their own right, the schematics show both precision & a tactile hand. Look closely to see imperfections and irregularities, as each box is unique and hand-painted.
The "point paper" or mise-en-carte that inspired Millefleur is hand painted with gauche. Each square is a coded warp or weft instruction.
The grid rows of a point paper design are converted into punch cards for a jacquard loom.
In the guild system of the medieval ages, assistants were free to improvise the "millefleur" that fill the background.
Jacquard weaving looms developed in Lyon in the early 19th century. A world leader in silk manufacturing since the Renaissance, Lyon’s production reached its peak with the jacquard innovation, which allowed for faster weaving of complex designs and improved affordability of woven textiles.
