The vine motifs in this stripe were inspired by an ink drawing from the archives of Farkas-Ortenzi, a textile art studio in Como, Italy known for crisp, graphic designs. The tiny dots between stripes form a “piqué” ground. This effect was common in copper plate print designs of the 1770s, as it helped to conceal defects. Like the street it is named for, this curvy, rolling stripe invites the eye to wander.
The original artwork document is hand-drawn in ink, in Francesco Ortenzi's signature high-contrast style.

The design studio overlooking Lake Como was founded in 1955 by Italian artist Francesco Ortenzi and his brother-in-law Paolo Farkas, who fled from Hungary during the war. They were known for graphic two-color textile designs, and their work was used widely on many projects from interiors, to fashion, to ceramics. Their studio was a pioneer in the Como textile industry, and later became an art academy that welcomed students worldwide from the 1960s-1990s.
